Meet Stephie

Alter Ego
Hey, who's that girl? She looks a little familiar.

That's Stephanie Rowe, the other me! This pic was taken when I won the 2003 Golden Heart Short Contemporary for Maiden in De-stress. Bet you didn't know there was another me. Yes, I have two personalities. I also write romantic comedy & chick lit under Stephanie Rowe and you can visit stephanierowe.com to learn about the other me. It's so much fun wearing two hats. *g*

High school rocks. And it sucks. Often within the same five minutes. Sometimes the only thing that'll get you through the day is a sense of humor and the ability to laugh at what a nightmare your life is.

I had to do a lot of laughing when I was in high school. A lot. It was either that or go hide in our attic for weeks on end so I didn't have to face my life. Since hanging out with the spiders wouldn't really help my social life all that much, I decided to suck it up and face whatever calamity was looming at the moment. Met a lot of cute boys and made some wonderful friends in the process. Okay, so I also might have gotten into a tiny bit of trouble from time to time. Isn't that part of being in high school?

To the awe of teachers everywhere, I made it through high school and even lived to tell about it! And now I get to write stories about high school, the fun, the misery, and of course, the boys.

Boys. Gotta love 'em. Gotta hate 'em too. Either way, you can't live without them! You can't live without friends either. Or parents. Or teachers. Or homework. For better or worse, you're stuck with them.

And so are the girls in my books. Grab a latte and a pan of brownies, hunker down with a book, and come join my heroines on their own journeys through high school.

Music: I am a country music fan, converted by my husband. Shania Twain rocks, and you have to love Toby Keith and how he doesn't give a rip what the world thinks about him. I love his song "How Do You Like Me Now," in which he thumbs his nose at a girl in high school who always thought he was an idiot. We all have those people in our lives who don't think we amount to much, and it's great when we can laugh and say, "How do you like me now?"

Television: Friends. Trading Spaces (could Ty be any hotter? I'd watch the show just for him! Totally yummy). I just started watching That Seventies Show and I'm beginning to get sort of hooked on that too. Hmmm.... cute guys again. They just seem to pull me in, you know?

Reading: I am in the middle of Killjoy by Julie Garwood. A great thriller with a hero to die for and a smart-mouthed heroine who keeps the guy in line. You gotta love a woman who can make a big, tough guy melt for her. Love the Mates, Dates... series. Last weekend, I tried to read Stephanie Doyle's new Harlequin Flipside, but my puppy intervened and tore up the book before I could read it. Guess I have a legitimate "Dog ate my homework" excuse, huh? He also ate my Seventeen magazine and a pair of my sneakers and a remote control and the headrest in my truck...the list goes on and on. Lucky for him he's so cute. Grr.

Movies: Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp is my current fave. He's just such a cutie in it, even if he is sort of a badboy. But just sort of. He's a good guy trying really hard to be bad, but not quite making the cut. I just rented Down with Love with Renee Zellwegger and Ewen McGregor. Great romantic comedy! Princess Bride. One of my all time favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, run, don't walk, to your nearest video store and rent it. You'll love it. It's that simple.

Food: Fresh Maine lobster (yum! yum!). I went to college in Maine, mostly for the unlimited lobster they served on special occasions. Lobster ROCKS! I also love key lime pie, chocolate (though I've discovered it gives me horrendous migraines, so I'm avoiding chocolate for the moment. Very sad indeed, but my hips seem to be quite happy with the change). And my mom's stew. She makes the best stew. You should come over and try it sometime and you'll see what I mean.

Fave Book: My favorite book of all time would probably have to be the James Herriot series of All Creatures Great & Small, All Things Wise and Wonderful, All Things Bright and Beautiful, The Lord God Made Them All. It made me want to be a veterinarian for a very long time, but somehow I never followed up on that path. Not sure what happened... And of course, all the Dick Francis mysteries. The man's a genius. As for romances? Anything by Julie Garwood or Jayne Anne Krentz. And I just finished Natalie Stenzel's November Flipside: fabulous! And Kaz Delaney's December SMOOCH: My Life as a Snow Bunny. Loved it!

Fantasy Guy: Country music singer Toby Keith. Every time I watch a "behind the scenes" on him, I have more respect for him and what he has accomplished. Lots of people told him he would never succeed and he did it anyway. I felt the same way when I was growing up--people telling me I wasn't good enough etc. It's a great feeling to be able to prove to all of them that yes, you actually did have what it takes. Plus, I think he's a total hottie.

Favorite Indulgence: My best day would be getting a couple great books, going out onto the deck on a sunny day, and spending the day reading, drinking lemonade, playing with my Labradors and being generally completely indulgent. I don't have much time for days like that anymore, but when I'm on vacation, I try to get an afternoon or two of total indulgence.
