Stephie Girls Only Say What? Surfin Contest

This is where you'll find out all the latest that's going on and other interesting tidbits of interest. Kind of like news central. Things that might make you go hummm....I didn't know that or that's interesting. At least I hope it'll make you say humm. It's always fun to learn about all those little things that are going on behind the scenes and what's around the corner.

PUTTING BOYS ON THE LEDGE TRIVIA

  • The original title of BOYS ON THE LEDGE was THE ART OF PUTTING BOYS ON THE LEDGE, but it was too long to fit on the cover so we had to shorten it.

  • I got the idea for the name Blueberry because a girl from my college had that name. I never met her, but I heard about her name and thought it was really cool. Plus, my first dog was named Blue, so I've always liked the name.

  • I'm a worse singer than Blue Waller is, so I have special empathy for her pain! One time I was telling a friend of mine how I was such a bad singer, and she refused to believe I was really that terrible. So she played the piano and I had to sing Oklahoma! for her. After about five seconds, she stopped playing and said, "You have to try." I was trying! That was as good as it gets!

  • Mr. Howland, the drama teacher in PUTTING BOYS ON THE LEDGE, is actually named after my sister-in-law's dad. His name is Mr. Howland and he's a superstar on the stage. And he can even sing. Lucky dog.

  • I'm an animal freak, so I'm very jealous that Blue has a barn with all those animals. I had a horse growing up, but I had to keep it at a stable because we didn't have space on our property. When I grow up, I want chickens and goats and horses of my own! And I want a cute boy like Colin to clean the barn for me too! Right now I have two dogs and two cats who all sleep on my bed with me. Such warm, furry loving!

  • I really did live by the Ledge when I was in school. I figure it's the only way to date without having your heart trampled on a regular basis. I personally hate the feeling of being trampled, so I tried to avoid it whenever possible. Live by the Ledge and voila! You can actually enjoy dating! When my mom started dating a few years ago, I explained the Ledge to her, but she didn't buy into it. Guess it's more of a modern kind of thing.

  • Guess whose story is next? Frances! She's about to discover the fun side of being in high school, even if she doesn't want to! Look for STUDYING BOYS in August!

  • Who is after Frances? Allie. She's going to meet her match in a boy! It's about time, huh?

Okay, I've been way lazy about posting on here. But I've had an excuse! I've driven almost ten thousand miles in the last two and a half months! Yep, drove cross country and back, with some side trips in the middle. Let's just say, there's a lot of cornfields in Kansas. The good thing about long road trips is that I got a lot of reading time. Here are some of the good books that helped me pass the miles:

Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde
Girls in Love by Cherie Bennett
Girls in Love by Jacqueline Wilson
A Girl, a Guy and a Ghost by Sherrie Rose

Four weeks until Studying Boys hits the shelves! YAHOO! I'm so excited!!! Check out my new contest-anyone want a free pair of Nike sunglasses, huh?

Three weeks until I head to Dallas for the RWA National conference. If you're near Dallas, swing by the huge booksigning on Wed nite (go to my appearances page for more details) to meet all your favorite authors!

Dog crisis last week: my eight month old puppy Kip got sick, so I called the vet to see if I should bring him in, and they told me it sounded like he had Parvo, which is deadly. I freaked out, until my dog threw up a bar of Dove soap, bubbles and all. Apparently, indigestion from eating an entire bar of soap and Parvo have the same symptoms. PHEW! I'll take the bar of soap any day!

Speaking of dog crises, that same puppy ate my Nike sunglasses yesterday while I was at Spiderman 2 (great movie, by the way. Definitely go see it!). See photo for the latest style in sunglasses (note the earpieces). Compare the new pair to the post-Kip pair.

New toy alert! Guess what I got on Friday??? A new computer! I'm so excited! It's an HP laptop with a CD burner and all sorts of fun stuff. It's the coolest thing not to have to reboot my computer five times a day because it keeps freezing up! Yahoo! How can I get work done when I have to play with my new computer???

Summer is almost here! Who can work? As I sit here at my desk, it's seventy five degrees out with a gorgeous blue sky. How nice is it here? It's swimming season! Just ask my dog Oscar, who lives for the water. Here's a photo Oscar during his first swim of the season. How happy does he look with that fat stick in his mouth? Life doesn't get any better than this.

Exciting news! I just got word that Natalie's story has been tentatively scheduled for Fall 2005, under the title of SMART BOYS & FAST GIRLS. Yay! Since Allie's story is coming out in November as WHO NEEDS BOYS? and Frances' story is coming out in August as STUDYING BOYS, you won't have to wait very long between releases! I'm doing the Snoopy happy dance!

A couple weeks ago, I received the galleys for STUDYING BOYS in the mail. The galleys are the printout of the book as it will look on the shelf. It's the last chance for me to see it before it gets bound, so if I miss any typos here... uh oh! I read and reread and reread them until I was cross-eyed and I did find a few mistakes. I hope I caught them all (nervously biting fingernails).

When I was doing the galleys for PUTTING BOYS ON THE LEDGE, I discovered that the drama teacher was a woman for the first part of the book and a man for the second part! Yikes! Fortunately I caught that, but it wasn't even on my first time through. Yeesh! Talk about pressure!

I met with the teen reading group at a local Barnes & Nobles a couple weeks ago and got to chat with some of the girls about LEDGE. It was so fun to talk to them, and Rachel, Brittany and Brooke told me about stories that they are writing. They sounded great and I think I'm going to have some competition on the bookshelves in a few years! Rachel even interviewed me for a paper she's doing. How cool is that?

Oh, and I just got back from a road trip to California this past week. I stopped at a bunch of bookstores en route and signed copies of the LEDGE. I still get giddy when I walk into a bookstore and see my name on the bookshelf!

Ooops. It's five thirty and my dogs have decided that they will jump on my keyboard until I get up and feed them, so I must be off! More later! TTFN!

    The Other Me:

I think we all have days when we wish we were someone else. Someone without our problems, our parents, our boyfriends, our zits. If only we could be anyone but who we are! Well, I'm lucky because I get to do just that. By day, I'm Stephie Davis, author of humorous teen books. By night, I'm Stephanie Rowe, author of humorous fiction for women. Some of my adult books are romantic comedy, where you get to sigh over hot guys even while you're laughing at the heroine's miserable life. Other books are about her issues and her life, and the guys are secondary. Sure, there are some guys in there (we always want guys around), but the story really belongs to her.
